This publication describes practical guidelines for successfully launching and sustaining stakeholder leadership groups (SLG). Although the recommendations are framed for health leaders, the basic principles in these guidelines are relevant and applicable across sectors when developing stakeholder groups at any level. The principles and practices can also be usefully applied in a variety of other contexts including when different USG Agencies work together closely on a shared initiative or when different teams within an organization need to work together more effectively.
It is now well established that developmental dynamics and challenges are far too complex and cut across too many organizational and sectoral lines to be handled by a single entity. In practical terms, a SLG consists of representatives from all of the key entities involved in planning, producing, managing, and supporting a specific activity or system. While it may seem relatively straightforward to create the inclusive alliances and networks needed to realize the benefits of SLGs, in practice it often turns out to be more difficult than one might anticipate. The recommended actions described in this resource are intended to raise the likelihood of forming an SLG that functions well, has a positive impact, and avoids or addresses typical difficulties.
