In today's fast-paced business environment, employees often don't get useful information about how they are performing. Many organizations recognize that they lack reliable or sufficient mechanisms for providing performance feedback and are turning to multi-source assessment processes (often called 360™ feedback). Multi-source assessment (MSA) collects performance data not only from supervisors, but also from peers, direct reports, and even customers. MSA provides more comprehensive feedback, but by itself doesn't necessarily lead to improved performance. Staff may not be sure how to interpret the data or how to use the information to be more effective on the job.

TRG has built on traditional MSA to create a process called Mosaic 360™. Mosaic 360™ is a three-stage performance improvement process for individuals, teams, and organizations. These three stages get the organization, organization, team or individuals ready for the process, collect and organize data, and provide the interpretation of results and roadmap for improved performance.

Mosaic 360™ goes beyond the limits of traditional MSA systems. First, it is customized, so that from the beginning, it is targeted directly at those areas where improved performance is most needed. Second, it combines TRG's extensive experience in organizational development and training with the proven, cutting-edge fully secure web-based 360™ software. Finally, Mosaic 360™ includes critical organizational support after the data is generated, so that the multi-source information can be used to its greatest advantage.

How It Works: Stages in Mosaic 360™

STAGE ONE -- Getting your organization, team or individuals ready for the process

Clarify Goals: We meet with you to help determine your goals, the type of information or feedback you are looking for, and how it will be used. Next, we clarify which subjects your organization wishes to assess. In the Mosaic 360™ process, subjects can include individuals, teams, and even the entire organizations.

Customize Assessment Criteria: We work closely with you to customize the assessment criteria so that it is consistent with your goals for improved performance.

Involve Staff: We orient staff on the Mosaic 360™ process so that they know how it works, why it's being done, and how the criteria are being used. We also familiarize staff with the mechanics of the process, increasing their confidence in its validity and confidentiality.

STAGE TWO -- Collecting and Organizing Data

Collect Data: Through a confidential web-based process, we collect the assessment data from all those providing feedback.

Prepare Reports: Using the software, we develop accurate, confidential customized reports for all subjects.

STAGE THREE -- Interpreting Results and Improving Performance

Interpret Results: We work with subjects to interpret the trends and messages in the data in the context of their organization. In addition, we help them stay focused on what the data is saying. We also ensure that subjects see and understand the linkages between the feedback they are getting, and their on-the-job performance.

Identify and Select Appropriate Actions Based on the information in the feedback report, we help subjects identify specific actions they can take to be more effective. Most often, this includes a combination of actions they can take immediately and longer term developmental activities.

Sustaining Improved Performance: We are available to work with subjects to help them honor the commitments in their action plans. We also work with the broader organization so that efforts to improve performance are supported at all levels. Over time, the 360™ feedback instrument can be repeated to gain a clear indication of how much progress has been made.

HOW MOSAIC 360™ CAN BE USED WITH INDIVIDUALS, TEAMS AND ORGANIZATIONS

For Individuals

Employee Development -- This involves soliciting a number of perspectives on an employee's performance based on certain agreed upon criteria. The data is presented to the employee only and is used to provide feedback on areas where s/he is performing well and on areas for improvement.

Performance Appraisal -- Much like employee development, performance appraisal involves assessing an employee based on certain criteria. The difference is that the data is shared with the employee's manager, and is used as one of the factors in making decisions about pay increases, bonuses, and promotion.

For Teams

Assessing Team Performance -- As many organizations make the transition to a team-based work environment, the need for an effective team assessment process has become critical. Mosaic 360™ builds on twenty-five years of TRG experience in helping teams to be more effective. The approach insures that teams gain a diverse perspective on performance, their collective strengths, and areas for improvement. Depending upon the needs of the client, the team-based application can take many forms. Some of our clients have implemented this application by having only internal team members participate in the assessment. Others have chosen to include outside perspectives, such as those of customers and partners.

For Organizations

Organizational Surveys -- The Mosaic 360™ process can also be applied at an organizational level. In this case, the "subject" is the organization itself, and the assessment questions are structured to address issues of organizational performance. As with teams, participants in the assessment process can be limited to internal staff or can include customers and partners.
