TRG's Work with Boards and Associations

TRG offers governance and capacity-building solutions tailored to the unique needs of associations, boards, and member-driven organizations making a difference. With over 50 years of experience and expertise in governing our own employee-owned organization, TRG integrates strategic facilitation, learning, organizational analysis, and other solutions to provide a holistic approach that strengthens leadership, teams, and individuals.

What We Offer

TRG has delivered hundreds of hybrid, virtual, and in-person convenings worldwide, ranging from small board retreats to large learning forums and multi-stakeholder meetings. We draw on systems thinking, adult learning principles, and proven governance practices to support associations from early formation through strategic realignment and organizational renewal. Our structured approach strengthens governance, develops leadership pipelines, builds alignment across diverse stakeholders, and navigates periods of transition and growth.

Examples of our board and association clients include the American Chemical Society (ACS), U.S. Forest Service International Foundation, American Forest Foundation and Nonprofit Board, National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI), Cable Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CATA & CTAM), North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), National Association of Development Organizations (NADO), and National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). Across these organizations, TRG adds value by bringing our expertise in:

  • Organizational Assessment: We use a consultative, data-driven approach, including interviews, focus groups, surveys, and landscape analyses, to help associations clarify roles, identify organizational challenges, and navigate shifts in governance, member needs, and revenue models. Our data collection and analysis processes are designed to be inclusive, representing the insights of all key stakeholders, and generate actionable recommendations.
  • Strategic Facilitation: Supporting groups to rethink governance, workflows, and service delivery in response to shifting mandates, shareholder and member pressures, and distributed leadership across affiliates. Our facilitators keep meetings focused on achieving the stated objectives while creating psychologically safe environments where board members, executives, and staff can speak openly, navigate conflict constructively, and make informed decisions.
  • Learning Assessment, Strategy, and Design: Designing and facilitating learning and knowledge-sharing assessments, structured learning program and content review, competency framework design, learning strategy development, and course design and implementation.
  • Leadership Development and Coaching: Building leaders at all levels who can perform, adapt, and lead through complexity. Our philosophy emphasizes both the core management and transformative leadership skills needed to support staff through change and foster empowered, accountable, and inclusive teams. TRG support for leaders ranges from individual coaching to leadership team building, retreats, and strategic planning.
